# How to advertise on ChatGPT: a complete guide for online stores

> Where ChatGPT ads appear, who sees them, how to open an Ads Manager account, structure campaigns and ad groups, use your product feed and measure sales.

Canonical: https://convrail.com/blog/how-to-advertise-on-chatgpt/

To advertise on ChatGPT, a business opens a self-serve ChatGPT Ads Manager account, adds a billing profile, then creates a campaign (objective, budget, countries), ad groups (bid and context hints) and ads (title, copy, image, landing page). Ads show below ChatGPT answers for Free and Go users. Measure sales with OpenAI's pixel and Conversions API.

This guide follows the order in which a store owner actually meets each step, and only states what OpenAI documents. Where something is not published, such as a typical cost per click for your category, the guide says so and explains how to measure it yourself.

## What ChatGPT Ads is, and what it is not

ChatGPT Ads lets businesses show sponsored placements inside ChatGPT. The [OpenAI Help Center](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/20001047-ads-in-chatgpt) describes three facts that shape every decision below:

- **Placement.** Ads can appear below the end of a response. They are labeled as sponsored and visually separated from ChatGPT's answer.
- **Audience.** Ads may appear for users on the Free and Go plans. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu accounts do not see ads, and OpenAI does not show ads to accounts identified as belonging to people under 18.
- **Rollout.** Ad testing started in the United States on February 9, 2026, and has since been extended to more regions.

What ChatGPT Ads is not matters just as much. In [OpenAI's own words](https://openai.com/index/our-approach-to-advertising-and-expanding-access/), ads do not influence the answers ChatGPT gives: they run on separate systems from the chat model, and advertisers have no ability to shape, rank or alter responses. Advertisers also never see chats, chat history, memories or personal details. They receive aggregated performance numbers such as views and clicks.

Two consequences for a store:

1. Buying ads does not make ChatGPT recommend you in its answers. Organic recommendations depend on your product data and your reputation on the web, which is why [ChatGPT organic and ChatGPT Ads](/blog/chatgpt-organic-vs-ads-attribution/) are two different channels to measure separately.
2. You cannot read the conversation that led to a click. What you can measure is what happens on your own site after it, which is why conversion tracking is part of the setup and not an afterthought.

## How ads are matched to conversations

There are no exact-match keywords in ChatGPT Ads. According to the [Help Center basics](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/20001207-ads-in-chatgpt-the-basics), the system selects ads based on expected relevance and outcomes, and weighs several signals:

- the context and intent of the current conversation,
- the ad's landing page, title and copy,
- the context hints you provide at the ad group level,
- and, when ads personalization is enabled, select signals from the user's broader ChatGPT experience.

Context hints are the closest thing to keywords. OpenAI describes them as descriptions of "the conversations, topics, or keywords where their products or services may be relevant", and is explicit that they "are not exact-match keywords and do not guarantee delivery in specific conversations". The [targeting documentation](https://developers.openai.com/ads/campaign-targeting) gives examples in the form of plain sentences, such as "Lightweight trail running shoes for rocky terrain", and allows up to 2,000 hints per ad group.

The practical lesson: write hints the way your buyers describe their need, not as a list of product nouns. "Desk lamp for a small dorm room, warm light for late study" carries more meaning than "desk lamp, LED, warm".

## Step 1: check that your business can open an account

Self-serve access goes through ChatGPT Ads Manager. The [availability page](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/20001245-ads-manager-availability) sets the rule: the legal entity that will advertise and be billed must be based in a country listed as available. If your country is marked as coming soon, or is not listed, you can still sign up and OpenAI notifies you when it opens. At the time of writing the list covers more than sixty countries across North America, Europe, the Middle East and Asia Pacific, and it keeps growing, so check the page rather than a copy of it.

One restriction surprises many new advertisers. Per the [campaign creation guide](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/20001210-create-campaigns-for-chatgpt-ads), some new self-serve accounts can initially advertise only in their home country. The account becomes eligible for other supported countries once identity verification is approved and it reaches the required advertising spend from campaigns in its home country. Selecting more countries in a campaign does not override this. If you sell abroad, plan a first phase on your home market.

## Step 2: set up billing and branding

ChatGPT Ads uses postpay billing. The [billing article](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/20001216-billing-payment) describes the setup: a billing profile with your business name, invoice email and billing address, then a payment method. Self-serve accounts are charged when unpaid spend reaches the account's payment threshold, or at the end of the month for any remaining balance. OpenAI's own example uses a $25 threshold; thresholds can rise over time with a good payment history, and you cannot change yours manually. A threshold is a charge trigger, not a budget: your spend is controlled by campaign budgets.

Branding is reviewed. The [Ads account reference](https://developers.openai.com/ads/account-management) separates the legal name, the internal account name and the public brand name shown in ads, and asks for a favicon in JPEG, PNG or WebP of at least 256 by 256 pixels. Changing the legal or public brand name pauses delivery until the account passes review again, so settle the name before you launch.

## Step 3: understand the campaign structure

Everything in Ads Manager follows one hierarchy, documented in [campaign management](https://developers.openai.com/ads/campaign-management):

| Level | What it controls | Typical store use |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Campaign | Objective, budget, schedule, countries, platforms, optional custom audiences | One campaign per market and objective |
| Ad group | Bid configuration and context hints shared by its ads | One ad group per product line or buyer need |
| Ad | Title, copy, image and landing page shown to the user | Two or three variations per ad group |

The objective is chosen once. OpenAI states that the campaign objective determines pricing and optimization, and that you should create a new campaign rather than edit an existing one into another objective. Three objectives exist: views (impression based), clicks (traffic) and conversions (optimized toward a standard conversion event such as a purchase, while you still pay per click). The cost side of these choices is covered in [How much does ChatGPT Ads cost](/blog/chatgpt-ads-cost/).

## Step 4: create the campaign

A campaign in Ads Manager holds a title, the objective, the conversion event for conversion campaigns, the budget, start and end dates, countries, optional platforms and optional custom audiences.

**Budget.** You choose a campaign-total budget or a daily budget. The daily budget is an average over a seven-day period: on one day spend can reach twice the daily amount, but over the seven days it will not exceed seven times it. The budget week runs from Sunday to Saturday in your ad account's time zone.

**Countries.** Location targeting uses ISO country codes, and the [targeting documentation](https://developers.openai.com/ads/campaign-targeting) allows inclusion and exclusion lists. Product feed campaigns are limited to country-level targeting.

**Platforms.** Three groups exist: the ChatGPT iOS app, the ChatGPT Android app and ChatGPT on the web, desktop and mobile. Leave all three on unless your checkout performs very differently on one of them.

**Custom audiences.** You can upload customer lists (emails, phone numbers, their SHA-256 versions) to include, exclude or adjust bids. Inclusion and bid multipliers require at least 25,000 matched users; exclusion has no minimum, which makes it useful for leaving existing customers out of an acquisition campaign.

## Step 5: build ad groups around buyer needs

An ad group carries the bid and the context hints. OpenAI's [ad group guide](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/20001211-create-ad-groups-for-chatgpt-ads) describes ad groups as a way to organize campaigns into focused themes, with hints that help the system understand broader needs, situations and natural variations in how people describe what they want.

For a store, a good ad group answers one question a shopper would actually ask. A home goods store might run:

- "Lighting for small apartments": hints about studio flats, renters, warm light, space-saving lamps.
- "Gifts for new homeowners": hints about housewarming, first apartment, practical gifts.
- "Reading lamps for students": hints about late study, dorm rooms, budget.

Each group then gets ads and landing pages that match its need, which also helps the relevance signals the system reads from your landing page.

On bidding, new eligible ad groups default to Maximize results, where ChatGPT Ads sets bids to get as many results as possible from your budget. You can also set a fixed maximum bid yourself. Both are explained, with their trade-offs, in the [cost guide](/blog/chatgpt-ads-cost/).

## Step 6: write the ads

A standard ad is a chat card. The [ad creation article](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/20001212-create-ads-for-chatgpt-ads) lists its parts: advertiser name, favicon, title, copy, landing page and image.

| Field | Documented limit | OpenAI recommendation |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Title | 3 to 50 characters | 16 to 24 characters |
| Copy | Up to 100 characters | 32 to 48 characters |
| Image | Square; JPEG, PNG or WebP, at least 640 x 640 in the API | No larger than 1200 x 1200 in Ads Manager |
| Landing page | Valid, reachable HTTP or HTTPS URL | Must not block OAI-AdsBot or OAI-SearchBot |

Three rules prevent most rejections:

1. **Do not block OpenAI's crawlers.** If your landing page refuses OAI-AdsBot or OAI-SearchBot, the ad cannot be reviewed or served. Check your firewall, bot protection and `robots.txt`.
2. **Match the ad to the page.** OpenAI rejects ads that are misleading or inconsistent with their landing page.
3. **Stay inside the ad policies.** Ads, landing pages and advertiser signals are reviewed against the [ad policies](https://openai.com/policies/ad-policies/) before they can run. Several sectors are disallowed or restricted, so read the policy for your vertical before writing anything.

Ads Manager can prefill a draft from your website's metadata. It does not generate copy or images with AI: it reuses what your page already says, which is one more reason to keep page titles and descriptions accurate.

Every campaign is submitted for review before launch, and editing a live ad's creative creates a new version that goes through review again.

## Step 7: use your product feed for product ads

Retail advertisers can create product feed campaigns. According to the [product feed campaign article](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/20001268-create-campaigns-from-product-feeds), you upload a product feed in Ads Manager, choose Product feed as the campaign type, create ad groups that select products through filters, and add an ad template. The resulting ads show product images, titles, ratings, prices, sale prices and your brand.

The [product feed documentation](https://developers.openai.com/ads/product-feeds) adds the technical side: a UTF-8 CSV file with one row per product variant, delivered over SFTP, plus a Delta API for price and availability changes between full uploads. Ad groups filter the catalog by attributes such as brand, category, price or custom metadata, and each product feed ad group holds at most one active product ad template.

The feed is where most stores lose products without noticing. A row that breaks the [OpenAI product feed specification](/blog/openai-product-feed-spec-explained/) is simply not eligible, and nothing in your ad account tells you which one or why. If some of your products never show, [this troubleshooting guide](/blog/products-not-showing-chatgpt-shopping/) walks through the usual causes. Convrail checks every product against the specification before it is sent and gives the exact fix for each refusal on its [product feed page](/product-feed/).

## Step 8: measure sales, not clicks

ChatGPT Ads reports clicks and spend within minutes, but the number that decides whether ads pay is the sales they bring. OpenAI's [conversion tracking guide](https://developers.openai.com/ads/conversion-tracking) offers three building blocks:

- the **Measurement Pixel**, which records actions in the visitor's browser,
- the **Conversions API**, which sends confirmed orders from your server,
- and both together, with shared event IDs so a sale is counted once.

The standard purchase event is `order_created`, with the amount in the currency's minor unit (8900 for USD 89.00). The default click attribution window is 30 days. Conversion campaigns need exactly one active standard conversion event, so tracking must be in place before you choose the conversions objective.

Two habits make the numbers trustworthy:

1. **Send purchases from your server, not only from the browser.** Ad blockers and closed tabs remove browser events; a paid order on your server is always there. [Pixel vs Conversions API](/blog/oaiq-pixel-vs-conversions-api/) explains why both layers are needed.
2. **Compare with your own orders.** Ads Manager tells you what OpenAI attributes to its clicks. Your store knows every paid order. Matching the two, order by order, is the only way to see true revenue and return on ad spend.

For Shopify stores, the step-by-step setup is in [How to track ChatGPT Ads conversions on Shopify](/blog/track-chatgpt-ads-conversions-shopify/). Convrail sets up the pixel and the server-side Conversions API from your Ads Manager key (or your Pixel ID and Conversions key) and counts each sale once; see the [tracking page](/tracking/) for how it works.

## Common mistakes when starting ChatGPT Ads

- **Launching before tracking.** A campaign without conversion data can only be judged on clicks, and a conversion campaign cannot be created at all without a standard conversion event.
- **Treating context hints as keywords.** Lists of product nouns describe your catalog, not the shopper's situation. Write the need.
- **Blocking OpenAI's crawlers.** Aggressive bot protection on the landing page silently prevents review and delivery.
- **Expecting to advertise abroad from day one.** New accounts may be limited to their home country until verification and a spend threshold.
- **Editing a campaign into another objective.** Create a new campaign instead.
- **Forgetting the feed.** Product ads only use products that pass the feed specification. Invalid rows disappear without warning.
- **Reading CPC as the result.** A cheap click that never buys is expensive. Track revenue and margin per product, as described in [the cost guide](/blog/chatgpt-ads-cost/).

## Launch checklist

| Before launch | Done when |
| --- | --- |
| Account | Legal entity in a supported country, billing profile and payment method added |
| Branding | Public brand name final, favicon at least 256 x 256 |
| Tracking | Pixel and Conversions API sending `order_created`, one ID per order |
| Feed | Products validated against the OpenAI specification, refusals fixed |
| Campaign | One objective, budget type chosen, countries and platforms set |
| Ad groups | One buyer need each, hints written as sentences |
| Ads | Title and copy within limits, square image, landing page reachable by OAI-AdsBot |
| Review | Campaign submitted and approved |

Once these lines are ticked, the work moves to reading results: revenue per order, ads against organic, and profit per product. [Convrail's attribution](/attribution/) matches each paid order to ChatGPT Ads or organic ChatGPT and shows return on ad spend next to your real margin; plans and the free tier are on the [pricing page](/pricing/).
