A Shopify store sells on ChatGPT through two channels. Organic: eligible products reach ChatGPT through Shopify Catalog, and buyers check out on your own store. Paid: ChatGPT Ads, set up from Ads Manager or OpenAI’s Shopify app, with a pixel and server-side conversions. The work that remains is measuring which orders each channel really brought, and what they earned.
The two ways a Shopify store reaches ChatGPT
Most confusion around “selling on ChatGPT” comes from mixing two separate channels. They have different owners, different rules and different costs.
| Organic discovery (ChatGPT agentic storefront) | ChatGPT Ads | |
|---|---|---|
| Who runs it | Shopify, through Shopify Catalog | OpenAI, through Ads Manager |
| What you pay | No fee from Shopify for selling in ChatGPT, only your usual payment processing fees | Ad spend, billed by OpenAI |
| How products get there | Eligible products are shared through Shopify Catalog | Your catalog synced to ChatGPT Ads, by OpenAI’s app or another connector |
| Where the buyer pays | Your online store checkout, inside ChatGPT’s in-app browser or a new tab | Your online store, after clicking the ad |
| What you need to set up | Store policies, eligible products, US buyers | An Ads Manager account, a pixel, ideally the Conversions API |
| How you measure it | Orders tagged by channel in Shopify, plus your own attribution | Ads Manager reporting, plus your own attribution per order |
Both channels end on your checkout. That is good news for measurement: every ChatGPT sale is a real Shopify order, with a landing page, a referrer and a payment. It is also why the attribution work matters, because Shopify and ChatGPT Ads Manager each see only part of the picture.
Channel 1: organic discovery through Shopify Catalog
What Shopify says it does
Shopify calls this the agentic storefront. In its own words, Agentic Storefronts “is a sales channel in the Shopify admin that connects a merchant’s products to AI shopping platforms”, and for ChatGPT it is “live for millions of Shopify merchants who sell to US buyers, regardless of store location” (Shopify).
The Shopify Help Center is precise about three points:
- It is a discovery channel. ChatGPT shows your products; the purchase happens “on your online store checkout in a ChatGPT in-app browser, or in a new tab when customers use ChatGPT web”. There is no direct in-chat checkout to switch on for ChatGPT.
- It is free on Shopify’s side. “There are no fees associated with selling in ChatGPT. You pay only your standard payment processing fees.”
- It is on by default for eligible stores. To opt out, you deactivate Shopify Catalog access in Sales channels > Agentic, and Shopify notes that “it can take up to 7 days before your product data is no longer being shared”.
Requirements to check
From the Shopify Help Center pages on ChatGPT and on Shopify Catalog requirements:
- You sell to customers in the United States. The store itself can be based elsewhere.
- Your store policies are filled in: terms of service, privacy policy, and return and refund policy, in Settings > Policies.
- Your products are eligible for Shopify Catalog: a title, at least one image, a price greater than zero, published to your online store (or Hydrogen or Headless), not unlisted, not hidden from search engines, no sensitive content. Free products are not eligible.
- Your plan and store status allow it: Shopify lists the Starter plan or higher, and a store that is not in private mode.
None of these steps involve an app. If your products meet the requirements, they are already candidates for ChatGPT discovery.
What still helps your products show up
Eligibility is the floor, not a ranking. ChatGPT recommends products it understands, so the quality of your product data still decides how often you appear:
- Complete titles and descriptions that say what the product is, who it is for and in what situation, in the words a buyer would type.
- Identifiers: a GTIN or a manufacturer part number lets an AI system match the exact product.
- Images, variants and prices that are accurate and consistent with your product page.
- Crawl access for ChatGPT search. OpenAI documents that “OAI-SearchBot is used to surface websites in search results in ChatGPT’s search features” and recommends “allowing OAI-SearchBot in your site’s robots.txt file” (OpenAI). Check that your robots.txt does not block it.
For the details of what makes a product line accepted or refused, see the OpenAI product feed spec explained and why products do not show in ChatGPT shopping.
Channel 2: ChatGPT Ads
What OpenAI’s Shopify app covers
OpenAI publishes a free app on the Shopify App Store called ChatGPT Ads, launched on September 3, 2026. Its listing describes five things:
- “Connect an existing ChatGPT ad account or create a new one directly from Shopify”
- “Automatically sync your Shopify product catalog to ChatGPT Ads Manager”
- “Create ads using your Shopify product catalog in just a few clicks”
- “Run ad campaigns across ChatGPT using a Shopify pixel and conversion events”
- “Track performance and manage campaigns without leaving Shopify”
If you only want to launch campaigns from your catalog and have conversions flow to Ads Manager, this app is the shortest path, and it costs nothing.
What it leaves for you to answer
Ads Manager tells you what OpenAI attributes to your ads. It does not answer the questions a store owner asks at the end of the month:
- Which of my orders came from ChatGPT, one by one? Ads and organic ChatGPT, kept apart, with the evidence behind each order.
- Which products make money once ad spend is subtracted? Revenue per product is not profit per product: your product cost and your ad spend both matter.
- Is my catalog accepted, and what exactly is refused? A product that fails validation simply does not show, and nothing tells you.
- Did tracking break this morning? A pixel that stops firing or a server send that fails costs conversions silently.
- Does ChatGPT recommend my store when buyers ask for what I sell? That is a different question from ad performance.
These are the gaps Convrail for Shopify is built to fill. It also runs next to OpenAI’s app: in Settings, you tick “OpenAI’s ChatGPT Ads app sends my conversions”. Convrail then stops sending conversions, so nothing is counted twice, and keeps matching every order, computing profit per product, checking your feed, watching tracking and measuring visibility.
Step by step: sell on ChatGPT with Shopify and measure it
Step 1: make your products eligible and complete
Fill in your store policies, check that your products have a title, an image and a price, and that they are published and not hidden. Then work on the data that drives recommendations: fuller descriptions, GTINs, named variant options. Convrail’s Improve my products screen scores each product and lists what to fix first, lowest scores at the top.
Step 2: decide whether you advertise
Organic discovery costs nothing on Shopify’s side. ChatGPT Ads buys extra reach. If you advertise, check that your advertiser entity is in a country where Ads Manager is open: OpenAI maintains the list on its Ads Manager availability page in the Help Center.
Step 3: install tracking that counts each sale once
ChatGPT Ads optimizes on the conversions it receives. A browser pixel alone misses sales that ad blockers and closed tabs hide, so the robust setup pairs the pixel with the Conversions API, both carrying the same event ID. OpenAI’s rule: “reuse the same value as the API id and pixel event_id” and OpenAI keeps one copy (Conversions API reference).
On Shopify, that means a web pixel for browser events and a server send triggered by the orders/paid webhook. The full walkthrough is in how to track ChatGPT Ads conversions on Shopify, and the reasoning behind two layers in OAIQ pixel vs Conversions API. With Convrail, you paste one Ads Manager key in Settings; when OpenAI has opened automatic setup for your account, Convrail creates the pixel and the Conversions key for you, and otherwise you enter your Pixel ID by hand.
Step 4: attribute every order
Each paid order is matched to ChatGPT Ads (an ad click identifier, oppref, captured from the landing URL) or to organic ChatGPT (a ChatGPT referrer or UTM source), from your store’s own data. The difference matters: an organic sale has no ad cost, an ad sale does. The method, and its limits, are detailed in ChatGPT organic vs ChatGPT Ads attribution and in finding the ChatGPT source of a Shopify order.
Step 5: read the numbers that decide your budget
Once orders are attributed and ad spend is imported from Ads Manager, three numbers decide what you do next:
| Number | Question it answers | Where Convrail shows it |
|---|---|---|
| Revenue from ChatGPT, ads and organic apart | Is ChatGPT a real channel for my store? | ChatGPT sales |
| Return on ad spend | Are my ads paying back? | ChatGPT sales |
| Net margin per product | Which products should I keep advertising? | Profit |
Products that cost more in ads than they earn are flagged at the top of the Profit screen. From there you can pause a campaign, change a bid, or narrow your ads to the products that pay, and daily guardrails can do it for you.
Step 6: watch it every day without watching it
Tracking and feed delivery fail quietly. Convrail checks them every 15 minutes and emails you when something breaks (a pixel not firing, sends to OpenAI failing, a feed delivery failing, a sudden drop in volume), and sends a weekly ChatGPT sales report on Mondays.
Common mistakes
- Treating eligibility as visibility. Being in Shopify Catalog makes a product a candidate. Complete data and identifiers make it a likely answer.
- Counting Ads Manager conversions as your revenue. Ads Manager reports what OpenAI attributes to ads. Your organic ChatGPT sales are not in it, and your margins are not either.
- Running two conversion senders. If OpenAI’s app already sends conversions, a second sender on the same pixel risks double counting. Choose one sender; Convrail’s coexistence setting exists for exactly this case.
- Optimizing on a browser pixel alone. Without the Conversions API, part of your sales never reaches Ads Manager, and campaigns learn from an incomplete signal.
- Ignoring refused products. A product that fails validation is invisible, with no error on your storefront.
Where Convrail fits
Convrail does not replace Shopify’s ChatGPT channel or OpenAI’s Ads Manager. It sits on top of both and answers the questions they leave open: every ChatGPT order matched to ads or organic, ROAS and profit per product, a product feed checked against the OpenAI spec with the exact fix for each refusal, alerts, and AI search visibility. It starts free; paid plans are listed on the pricing page. For the tracking layer on its own, see conversion tracking; for the feed, see product feed; for revenue per order, see attribution.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need an app to sell on ChatGPT with Shopify?
Not for organic discovery. Shopify shares eligible products with ChatGPT through Shopify Catalog, and the ChatGPT agentic storefront is active by default for eligible stores that sell to US buyers. You need an app or your own integration for ChatGPT Ads conversion tracking and for measuring revenue per order.
Does the customer pay inside ChatGPT?
Not for Shopify's ChatGPT channel. According to Shopify, buyers complete the purchase on your online store checkout, in a ChatGPT in-app browser on mobile or in a new tab on ChatGPT web. Your payment methods, branding and checkout customizations apply.
Is selling on ChatGPT free for Shopify merchants?
Shopify states there are no fees associated with selling in ChatGPT through its agentic storefront: you pay your standard payment processing fees. ChatGPT Ads is a separate, paid advertising channel billed by OpenAI.
My store is outside the United States. Can I sell on ChatGPT?
Yes for the organic channel, as long as your store sells to customers in the United States: Shopify says the store itself can be based anywhere. ChatGPT Ads has its own country list, published by OpenAI in its Ads Manager availability page.
Can I use OpenAI's ChatGPT Ads app and Convrail together?
Yes. Tell Convrail in Settings that OpenAI's app sends your conversions: Convrail stops sending them so nothing is counted twice, and keeps matching every order to ChatGPT Ads or organic ChatGPT, with profit per product, feed checks, alerts and visibility.
